Sung in 1960 by St. Mary’s Catholic School Children’s Choir in Johnson City, Tennessee for a First Communion mass.

Verse 1: (children’s plea to Mary)

O Mary Mother sweetest mother,
From Heavens immortal bowers,
Will you gather for a little child
A bouquet of sweet flowers?
I wish my little heart to be
A cradle fair and gay (a cradle fair today)
Where Jesus can repose with me
On my First Communion Day.

Verse 2: (Mary’s Response-female solo)

My dearest child I can obtain
So bright a gift for thee,
That Jesus will delight to come
Within your heart to be.
But oh, so often it will need
The watering of a prayer.
Now tell me little one so dear
Will you promise to take care?

Verse 3:… (children respond)

Oh, Mary dearest mother
You know how frail I am
Sometimes a careless, thoughtless child
A weak and helpless lamb

Yes I also remember the other one and think this Sweet Communion song follows on from O Mary Mother Sweetest Best, from thy bright heavenly throne….
How wonderful were those days of preparation when we learned all the prayers before and after Holy Communion. Why do we not teach children these prayers?
I can remember placing my head in my hands on the front of the pew and having “a quiet time with Jesus” and then the whole First Holy Communion group would recite the prayers – Acts of Faith, Hope and Charity.
Now it is all chit chat to everyone else except Jesus!!!

“How sweet to be a liitle child ” has a second verse, viz
What other day in all our lives can be so sweet as this,
when Christ bestows on children’s lips their first Communion kiss -
And yet another day will come as full iof joy as this;
My first and last Communion kiss will bring me equal bliss -
When Jesus o’er my pillow bends to soothe my dying tongue
The kiss of Christ will be as sweet as when my lips were young.

It was sung at my first Communion in 1953 at the Sacred Heart School in Hobart, Tasmania. I should love to know if there is any more, but I think that probably completes it.

am also looking for my first communion hymn that i love so much every time i pray to Mary i sing this hymn and only remember just the same that you have remembered

After hunting for the lyrics for 3 months, I finally found them. Thought I would share them on this although it may not be of use to you anymore. I love this hymn so much and my First Communion class love singing it.

Pam i think that must be the one! I did all those searches myself as well on the internet and came up with nothing.
Joanna thats great i hope he has a special day and please do post the lyrics!
Athanasius i dont think that is the same song.

it’s a sweet little song though – got a real nursery rhyme style to it, i think thats why i must have had it stuck in my head so long lol.
